Distraction Burglaries
December 2009
There have been a number of distraction burglaries across the area where people are pretending to be local water board officials or even police and gaining entry to people’s houses and stealing items when the owners are distracted.
They particularly target elderly or otherwise vulnerable people. Please pass this information on to anyone relevant you can think of and please tell them to ensure that they do not let anyone into their home who they do not know or are not expecting unless they can verify their identity. Most reputable organisations will equip their people with proper identification cards and will not mind being left on the doorstep whilst their identity is checked. We would remind people that if they are checking somebody’s identity then they should use a phone number from the phone book, not the number on the ID card itself.
